SURF WITH STEVE IRWIN, THE CROCODILE HUNTER

I ended up taking Steve for a surf because his minders in Auckland only knew one
surfer, me!
He was determined to surf a black sand beach while he was here (between TV appearances)
and to fit with his schedule we had to do the dawny at 3-4ft Kare Kare.
The Croc Hunter caught a few on a 6'10" Rounded pin he borrowed off me, and he could
surf, alright.
He was wearing the trademark shorts and Khaki shirt, (he even wore the shorts in
the water). I wonder if he owned any other clothes...?
Steve was really cool and basically exactly the same as he is on TV, he was a bit
disappointed that he didn't have time to climb the cliffs at Kare Kare and hand take
down some wild pigs in the Waitakeres on the way back, but he made up for that by
coming over for coffee after the surf and showing us his catalogue of spider, snake
and critter bite scars, Just like Clint in Jaws.
It was great to meet him and an honour to take him for a surf.
He's sadly missed.
